Bio
Venus Jasper (Griepink) is a queer visual artist, singer-priestess, educator, writer and curator - currently based between Amsterdam and Antwerp. In their counter-cultural and ritualistic work they envision spirited and sensuous post-capitalisms that spell the decolonization of the anthropocene, rekindle more-than-human kinship, and forward (neuro-)queer perspectives on ecology, culture, spirituality and the self.
Venus likes to create multidisciplinary art projects; ultra-sensory spatial installations wherein grounded tactility meets playful mythological futurism. From sculptural mudscapes teeming with life to participatory performances, from ritual workshops to audiovisual pieces, from electronic soundscapes to vernacular sculptures — each creation invites audiences into a realm of exploration and introspection about both personal and planetary concerns. Highlights are their large solo exhibition EARTHSHRINE (2022) at MU Eindhoven, which was a speculative and contemporary sacred space for soils, the bog-fury invoking music-performance OAKBaLLZ and EELSKin (2023) at Rupert Lithuania.
Since recent years, Jasper's artistic work increasingly involves music production and the development of songs and invocations, alongside of a deepening sculptural practice that explores the artists relation to sacred swamps, (white-European) ancestry, and trauma — such as the object-based installation Mire of Melusine (2025) at Garage Rotterdam, which presented as a personal shrine. Venus is currently assembling a written work reflecting on neurodiversity, "sacred nature", chronic illness and medicine practices. In 2025, Venus will attempt to wrap up and release their music debut Bzz Bzz, which is the result of sonic explorations of dark emotions, heated in the crucible of climate decay, rising fascisms, and the lethal death-spasms of Empire.
Be it through art, writing, curating or educating, Jasper's activities root in the interplay between feeling and knowledge, and explore the fields of queer ecology, environmentalism, land-based ways of knowing, rejected wisdom, activism, science fiction, the more-than-human, sex, gender, and identity.
Credentials
Venus Jasper holds an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) from the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam (2013) and is trained in Permaculture Design, Reiki, Somatic Psychotherapy, Speculative Writing, Music Production, and is currently part of Before We Where White by White Awake. Their work was presented at MU Hybrid Art House Eindhoven (NL), LungA Festival (IS), Rupert Vilnius (LT), NEST Gallery - Everglades National Park (US), TENT Rotterdam (NL), Garage Rotterdam (NL), Zone2Source (NL), 1646 (NL), Tidens Krav (NO), Bonnefantenmuseum (NL), Green Space Miami (US), Earthbound Symposium (DK), Museum IJsselstein (NL), Mediamatic (NL), Lustwarande Tilburg (NL), IMPAKT Festival (NL), Odapark (NL), Melkweg Expo (NL), Onomatopee (NL), and MuHKA Antwerpen (BE), amongst other.
Besides their artistic work, they are a freelance curator for RE_NATURE and are/were a course tutor at BEAR ArtEZ Arnhem (2023), Ecology Futures MA MICV/St. Joost Den Bosch (2021-22), Scenography AHK Amsterdam (2024-25), and mentor at RE: Opera, Sandberg Institute (2024).
